Sentences to Ponder (John Kelly/Carl Jung)

I’m afraid medicine has nothing for you. I recommend three things. A protective wall of human community. Real religious insight. And a group of friends with whom you can be honest. John Kelly, PhD, paraphrasing Carl Jung’s letter to Bill Wilson.

  1. I agree, sir.

And Mark, you got me thinking.

Assets in the community: 1) a larger number of people who form an outer protective circle against threats both from the outside and the inside; 2) a much smaller number of people who form an inner nest whose main functions of relating and intimacy consist of support around the core value of honesty.

Assets in the person: interior functions founded on and residing within spiritual principles.

All 3 are elements of recovery capital.

My guess is you’re exactly right.

    Peace.

  2. The literature that I read regularly tells me that …medicine, religion, and psychiatry were not sufficient for us. It goes on to say that through desperation we sought help from each other. If nothing else, I’ve learned that what is written, what I read, and how it is interpreted by others can be very different.

I need that human community to help me understand all of it. I need to know that “religious insight”, has nothing to do with my specific beliefs, but is about gaining insight into all of it through that diverse human community. If I hang out in the human community long enough, learn to listen, learn to talk about my experience, honestly, and show up regularly, healthy friendships develop.

Wouldn’t it would be amazing if there were places that existed all over the world where I could go that offer exposure to that diverse human community? Maybe there are?Maybe it takes desperation to go find them?
