Earlier today Dr. David McCartney posted a piece on Smoking and Recovery His comments are encouraging.
I thought I would add a little more.
The free-standing residential addiction treatment program where I currently serve made the switch to tobacco-free in early 2013. This article was written a year later and covers lessons learned.
It discusses our conceptual and practical reasons for the change, our organizational struggles and stages of change prior to the switch, and how we made the change within our organization. The article touches:
- Philosophical congruence/alignment
- Board and executive leadership
- Various clinical disciplines
- Visitors
- Responses to the presence of smoking materials
- Withdrawal management
- Family members
- Help for employees
- and reasons for a recovery orientation vs a “smoking cessation” approach.
Perhaps the article will be of help in some way; we have found organizations considering this change are benefited by input and support from others that have done the same.
