But I do like Sorkin’s piece.

I had the same thought. I would have liked the sentence better if he had said that Hoffman died of heroin addiction.
Maybe he should hire us as writing consultants.

He did expand on that idea in the second paragraph. “He didn’t die because he was partying too hard or because he was depressed — he died because he was an addict on a day of the week with a y in it. ”
