Addiction Recovery Blog has a post on how being too critical hurts one’s recovery.
The writer zeros in on self-criticism and offers a method for addressing it. It all sounds fine, though I’d point out that steps 4 through 9 should be pretty helpful with this too.
The reason I was drawn to this post is that I’ve often thought that one of the biggest gifts of 12 step recovery is that it teaches constructive self-criticism. Prior to recovery, most of us were only capable of destructive self-criticism as a result we lived in cycles of self-loathing, blaming others and sweeping everything under the rug.
